Hiking - Mali Bič 920 MASL

Medieval fortress Jagat – the most beautiful viewpoint overlooking the Lim River valley.

Pogled sa Malog Biča na Priboj (Jagat)

About the medieval fortification Jagat

On the elevation of Mount Mali Bič, at the summit called Grad (920 meters above sea level), near Priboj, you can find the medieval fortress of Jagat. The richness of the cultural and historical heritage is evident by the fact that there are a total of 17 medieval towns, fortresses, and strongholds from Priboj to the confluence of the Lim River and the Drina River. Some of them were built on the sites of older settlements, dating back to the time of prehistoric miners, and they all bear witness to the significance of the Polimlje region and hold the secrets of centuries. While they are documented on archaeological maps, except for Jagat, which has been partially reconstructed and is still under research, the others seem to have been forgotten.

The advantage of this site is its accessible infrastructure and dominant position, making it an observation point with a breathtaking view of the Lim River valley. All of these factors enable the fortress to fully utilize its tourism potential.

Activities

There are two ways to reach the Jagat fortress, and you can choose the one you prefer.

The first, shorter and less demanding option involves driving to the fortress, and then taking a leisurely walk of 20 minutes (1.5 km) to reach the top of Mali Bić, i.e., the Jagat fortress.

The second route starts from the old part of the town (near the Terme 36.6 hotel). You will follow the health trail towards Osovnica, pass through the Tepa clearing (620 m), and continue towards the Jagat fortress, located on Mali Bić, at the summit known as Grad, which is at an altitude of 920 meters.

The elevation gain over the 5 km distance is 530 meters, and it takes about 2 hours to complete the ascent. This trail is not very demanding and is suitable for all ages, even without significant physical preparation.

Upon reaching the summit, you will find archaeological excavations, the fortress, and a small cave. From here, you can enjoy the most beautiful view of the Lim valley and the surrounding peaks, which I won’t list here. After a short break, an instructor will provide training on the basics of rope usage and descent techniques. Once you’ve mastered the technique and gained confidence in the equipment, you’ll descend a 40-meter rock face. Partway down, you’ll enter a cavity (cave) that leads to the top of the cliff.
